What to expect when travelling to Nepal

Alright, so you have all planned out for a visit to Nepal and you are all excited about the trip. You have checked all the information you could possibly get via Google, but you still want or need to know more about Nepal? Relax; you are in the right place to be searching for more.

During my first trip to Nepal, I was in the same situation. I was a little thrilled, excited, but at the same time a bit nervous, because it was my very first trip to this mountainous country. With full of enthusiasm I board the flight to Nepal with many hopes. Just to let you know that there are no direct flights to Kathmandu from any place in North America. To add, it is a very lengthy flight to Nepal. It is pretty hectic. But you will instantly feel all the travel time is worth once you reach this beautiful country of Nepal.

Well, let me tell you when you land in Kathmandu Airport it is nothing like in developed countries. You will find everything smaller, quieter, and breezy weather (if you are traveling during September or October) when you land. People are nice but just be careful with some cab drivers for the money they might over charge you to reach your hotel room. The government of Nepal has publicly announced the fixed prices for public transportation including pickups from the airport to the hotel rooms. You should know this and it is important. If you have arranged for a private vehicle, which I had from my Nepali friend, you don’t need to worry about charges, unless your friend is a reap-off of course.

Driving or riding in a vehicle in the roads of Nepal is quite different. The vehicle has its wheel on the right and it drives on left lane of the road. This is just opposite in North America. Traffics are pretty bad these days in the city of Kathmandu due to over population. Air quality is not very good as you might have to use masks to protect yourself from the air pollution. This is just in the Kathmandu valley, though. Once you are out of the valley you are in heaven. Honestly, you should and I hope you plan to spend most of your stay outside the Kathmandu Valley. That is when you see real Nepal.

Greet the people of Nepal by saying ‘Namaste’, which is very similar to saying ‘Hi’ or ‘Hello.’ The use of this term is everywhere in Nepal. You will see the smiles in the faces of Nepalese when you greet them. Trust me; they are very welcoming and approachable. One of the kindest people I have seen on earth. Such a small country but with big heart. I was once invited to this family dinner party at my friend’s house, and it was marvelous. The food they prepared was very delicious. It was very close to Indian food but less spicy. I loved it because I am not very fond of spicy food. We had rice, vegetables and chicken with some Nepalese homemade soup. We also had some delicious homemade dessert in the end.

My Nepali friend and I had plans for a Nepal visit. The first plan was to trek and bike in nature. You could find lots of bike rentals in the city. They are not very pricey, and bikes are of good quality too. As an intermediate biker, I rent one for NRs. 500 per day (this is equivalent to USD 4.5.) You could also find biking and hiking accessories for relatively cheap prices. Biking and trekking in the hills and mountains were life time events for me.  In our days we also visited lots of historical temples in the Kathmandu Valley. This is something completely different from North America. The culture is so rich, and the values are even richer. People are very religious and are very serious about their religion and culture. The only sad part about the temples in the Kathmandu City is that some of the temples are still in the process of building post 2015 major earthquakes. Even after so many years most of them are still in process of completing. However, this did not stop us from visiting shrines and take beautiful pictures.
