Kathmandu – Manakamana Tour

Overview

The Manakamana Temple situated in the Gorkha district of Nepal is the sacred place for Hindu Goddess Bhagwati. In Nepali language, ‘Mana’ means heart and ‘Kamana’ means wish. It is believed that your wish may or will come true if you ask for to this Goddess. In the hope of fulfilling the wish, thousands of Hindus visit this temple from all over the country. And some even visit from the neighboring countries like India in the hope of fulfilling their wishes.

The temple lies approximately 12 kilometers south of the town Gorkha, and at the range of 1300 meters above the sea level. Prior to 1997 or so, the devotees had to walk to this temple from the base of the hill. It would take about 3-4 hours of walk to reach the height of the Manakamana Temple. It used to be fun for the youngsters but not very good for old-aged people.  In 1997, a business entrepreneur from the town of Chitwan proposed the idea of installing cable car to the height of the temple. And ever since the cable car was installed people of all ages got to ride on the cable to reach the height of the temple to worship.

Itinerary

Day 01:

The one-day trip to Manakamana has to start early in the morning to ensure you spend most of your time at the temple. Also, depending on the traffic it is a good idea to start as early as possible. Sometimes the traffic may hinder your plans and consequently reach the destination later than expected. It takes about 2-3 hours of ride to reach Kurintaar. From kurintaar you can take a pass to ride on cable car to reach the Manakamana temple. Normally, people spend 3-4 hours in and around the temple by worshipping, taking pictures, chatting and eating. By 4 to 5 pm in the afternoon, you can ride  back to Kathmandu.

Day 02:

If you are planning to stay one night at the Manakama Temple then this itinerary will suit you. For 2 days’ trip you do not necessarily have to ride early morning. However, if you want to stop by in the places while traveling to the temple then early morning trip also is not a bad idea. At any starting time you will spend a night at the destination. There are several decent hotels at the height of this temple. Prices are reasonable for the night stay with food included. In the evening, post temple visit, you can also go for some short hiking around the places for fun.
